While people were reveling in love during Valentine’s Week, a story from Bihar’s Katihar unfolded, revealing the reality of online romances. What started on Instagram progressed through phone calls and eventually to sharing private photos and videos, culminating in the groom’s arrest from the wedding mandap, clad in his sherwani.
The narrative began around a year ago when a young woman from Manihari district met a man named Nikesh Kumar Jha on Instagram. Nikesh, hailing from Samastipur district in Bihar, visited Katihar occasionally to meet relatives. Their social media chats evolved into lengthy phone calls, drawing them closer together.
In this phase of trust, the sharing of personal photos and videos occurred. Unbeknownst to her, this trust would become her worst nightmare. Allegedly, a few months later, Nikesh began to pressure her for marriage. When the woman and her family refused, he threatened to leak compromising photos and videos via social media.
Fearful of social stigma, the woman initially remained silent, and her family was also coerced. Faced with relentless blackmail, she consented to marriage. Preparations were underway as Nikesh arrived in Katihar with the wedding entourage.

ASP Abhijeet Kumar Singh stated that swift action was taken following the young woman’s complaint. The accused was apprehended and is now in judicial custody. The police’s investigation will include the examination of electronic evidence.
At the police station, the young woman recounted her entire story on camera, demanding stringent action. She asserted that her trust was exploited, leading to psychological harassment. Meanwhile, some attendees acknowledged that if the allegations were true, the groom's actions were indeed wrongful.
