The opposition has taken a strong stance against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. They have now submitted a no-confidence motion to the Lok Sabha Secretary General against Birla. Around 118 MPs from parties like Congress, DMK, and Samajwadi Party have signed the notice to initiate a proposal to remove the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla from his position.

Following the submission of the notice to the Lok Sabha Secretary General, Om Birla has recused himself from conducting proceedings in the house and did not assume his chair on Tuesday.

Rahul Gandhi, however, did not sign the no-confidence motion. Congress sources indicate that, in order to uphold the dignity of parliamentary democracy, it was deemed inappropriate for the leader of the opposition to sign the no-confidence motion notice against the speaker.

The opposition issued a notice on Tuesday proposing the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Birla had previously prevented Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders from speaking during the debate on the President's address in the house. The opposition has alleged in the notice that comments made by the speaker in the house have falsely accused Congress members.

According to Congress party sources, it would not be proper for the leader of the opposition to sign a no-confidence motion notice against the speaker. They emphasized that this decision was made in respect of institutional propriety and parliamentary traditions, while the opposition expressed its concerns about the functioning of the house in the notice. This move highlights a significant escalation in the ongoing confrontation during the budget session between the opposition and the treasury bench.

Congress leader Manickam Tagore shared on social media, "The opposition continues to uphold its faith in constitutional values. While personally respecting the Honorable Speaker, we are troubled and disappointed by the continuous lack of opportunity given to opposition MPs to raise issues of public importance. After many years, a no-confidence notice has been issued against the Speaker. This is a very necessary move."

Following this, the BJP raised an issue of factual error in the no-confidence motion notice against the Lok Sabha Speaker, pointing out an incorrect year mentioned in the document.

BJP leaders noted that the letter mistakenly mentioned the year 2025 instead of the current year, raising questions about the authenticity of the submission. They also noted that the motion was supported with the signatures of 118 MPs.

Previously, BJP's women MPs had sent a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla demanding the 'harshest action under the rules' against opposition MPs due to the chaos in the house on February 4, 2026. The letter accused opposition members of storming the well, climbing onto the Speaker's table, and disrupting proceedings.
