A shocking case has emerged from the Bidar district of Karnataka, tarnishing the sanctity of familial bonds. Anjanabai Patil, a 22-year-old married woman, died under mysterious circumstances in Basavakalyan town. Her body was found hanging from a hook in her home in Om Nagar. Her father has made startling allegations against her in-laws.
According to the deceased’s father, Anjanabai not only faced mental abuse but was also being forced into prostitution. Anjanabai married Shekhar Patil, who runs a pani-puri business, in 2022. They have an 11-month-old daughter. Initially, the incident was deemed a case of suicide.
Her family’s complaint turned this into a complex criminal investigation. As per the complaint filed by Anjanabai's father, Vijaykumar, the root of the dispute lay in Shekhar’s late homecomings, typically around 11 PM to midnight due to business commitments, which Anjanabai disapproved of. She expressed her concerns to her mother-in-law Arunabai and father-in-law Chandrakant.

This led her in-laws to side with their son, pressuring Anjanabai to adjust. Allegedly, she was demeaned over household chores and cooking. In his shocking statement to the police, Vijaykumar revealed that Arunabai allegedly had illicit relationships.
The accusations suggest that her in-laws coerced Anjanabai into immoral activities, pushing her towards prostitution. A heated argument erupted over the phone when the family confronted the in-laws on this issue. On the afternoon of February 6, 2026, around 2:40 PM, Anjanabai's father was informed about her hanging. Upon reaching the site, they found her body still suspended from the hook.
Relatives suspect the incident might be a planned murder rather than a suicide. A case has been registered under sections 85, 108, and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code against husband Shekhar, mother-in-law Arunabai, and father-in-law Chandrakant. The police have gathered evidence from the scene, and the post-mortem report is awaited to clarify the exact cause of death.
