The series of rains in Delhi continues intermittently. Over the past few days, the national capital has seen both heavy and moderate rainfall. The weather department has issued a rain alert in Delhi for the next three days, indicating that the end of July and the beginning of August could witness heavy rains. Despite the rains, there are no signs of relief from the sultry heat in Delhi and the surrounding areas.

The weather department has predicted light rain with thunderstorms today, July 30, in Delhi. Heavy rain is expected from July 31 to August 1. Afterward, a decrease in rainfall intensity is anticipated. According to the IMD, Delhi's maximum temperature this week is expected to range between 33 to 38 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to be around 26 to 30 degrees Celsius. With the heavy rain warning in place, there are speculations that waterlogging could reoccur in the national capital.

According to weather forecasting agency Skymet, Delhi is nearing its normal July rainfall levels. Although there hasn't been much heavy rain in the past three days, moderate monsoon rains occurred between July 22 and 26, bringing Delhi close to its monthly rainfall level. These showers have been uneven and intermittent, yet more than 100 mm of rain has been recorded during this period. The base station Safdarjung has recorded a total of 203.2 mm of rain from July 01 to 29, 2024, compared to the normal 209.7 mm. Moderate to heavy rain is expected in the upcoming days of this week.

The monsoon trough is moving southward from its normal position, leaving Delhi on the left side of the trough at a considerable distance. Consequently, the winds at the lower level are humid (moist) easterlies, but today they are not favorable for any significant activity. Under the effect of a weather system over the northern Pakistan region, the trough line is shifting northward, approaching closer to Delhi. However, the trough line will remain distant until tomorrow. Therefore, heavy rain on July 31 is likely.

A cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the northern Bay of Bengal and Gangetic West Bengal today, July 30, reorganizing the monsoon trough over the Indo-Gangetic plains. On July 31, the cyclonic circulation will become more organized and move towards land the following day. The monsoon will become active across the trough region, from northern Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab in the west to West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand in the east.

The monsoon trough will pass through Delhi on July 31, staying nearby for the next two days as well. Heavy rain is expected in Delhi and its suburbs on July 31. Moderate and intermittent rain will continue on August 01 and 02. On August 03 and 04, the trough line will shift southward, and weather activities will reduce. The oscillation of the trough and its northward drift between August 05 and 07 will again amplify weather activities. This means July will end with rains and August will start with monsoon rains in Delhi.
