In the coming weeks, Bihar will witness state assembly elections. Although the dates have not yet been announced by the Election Commission, new guidelines have already been released in anticipation. Bihar will be the starting point for a new initiative where candidates' photos on EVM ballots will now appear in color. Previously, these photos were in black and white.

The Election Commission has issued directives stating that henceforth, candidates' photos on the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) ballots will be printed in color. This trial begins in Bihar and will eventually be implemented in other states.

With these changes, the candidate's face will cover three-quarters of the ballot paper, making it easier for voters to identify their choices. Additionally, serial numbers will be given greater prominence. Such measures aim to boost electoral transparency while focusing on voter convenience.

What is an Electronic Voting Machine?

An EVM is a device used to cast votes in elections. Voters press a button to vote for their preferred candidate, and their vote is directly recorded in the machine. EVMs were first employed across all seats in India during the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.
