Recent research published in the BMJ advises that a diet high in ultra-processed foods, favored in countries like Australia, the US, France, and Ireland, is associated with increased risks of developing 32 severe diseases, including various cancers, respiratory conditions, cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, metabolic syndromes, and even premature death. The study found that death from heart disease could escalate by 48-53% due to such a diet. The likelihood of depression, general mental disorders, and type 2 diabetes also soared by 12 percent.

Evidence also shows that excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods can heighten the overall mortality risk by 21 percent, with the risks associated with heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes escalating up to 40-66 percent. Risks linked with sleep disturbances and depression were also found to rise by 22 percent.

The researchers established a direct correlation between the extensive intake of ultra-processed items and heightened risks of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression, sleep-related issues, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cancer, and obesity-related conditions.

The study further indicated an increased threat of breast cancer, tumor developments, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and prostate cancer due to heavy consumption of ultra-processed foods.

What are ultra-processed foods?

Ultra-processed foods are manufactured via complex procedures in factories, which often involve the addition of preservatives and artificial ingredients. These foods typically undergo multiple processes, including extrusion, hydrogenation, and cooking at high temperatures. Sweet snacks, packaged baked goods, fast food, and sugary drinks are prime examples of such items.

These foods generally have reduced levels of vital nutrients and fiber but are high in unhealthy fats, sugar, and salt. Regular consumption of these ultra-processed foods is increasingly linked with health issues such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
