Relief from the scorching heat is in sight as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts the Monsoon to knock on Kerala's doors within the next 24 hours. Parallel to Kerala's welcoming conditions for the onset of Monsoon, Delhi-NCR experienced a swift climate volte-face this afternoon (Wednesday), with the sudden eclipse of the sun and a takeover by clouds in several regions. Light drizzle and rain were also recorded in various localities.
According to IMD projections, areas including UP, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR are set for rain accompanied by powerful winds in the next few hours. The department anticipates rainfall and light showers in Sonipat, Rohtak, Hapur, Gulawati, Siyana, Sikandarabad, Bulandshahr, and nearby vicinities within two hours. Concurrently, wind speeds could reach 30-40 km/hr. Certain areas of Delhi like Najafgarh, Palam, and Aya Nagar are on alert for expected showers.
The IMD asserts clear skies for Wednesday, with hot winds blasting at speeds of 25 to 35 kilometers per hour. Maximum temperatures could soar to a blistering 46 degrees Celsius, with the mercury dropping to a minimum of 28 degrees at night. Cloud cover may persist on Friday and Saturday, with possibilities of dusty, thunderous gusts.
In Mungeshpur, a neighborhood in Delhi, the temperature hit a record-setting 52.3 degrees Celsius today, Wednesday, May 29, marking the nation's hottest day so far. Noteworthy, the official maximum temperature will be reported at 5:30 PM. Meanwhile, the IMD had earlier posited May 30 for the inaugural Monsoon rains in Kerala, which is anticipated to bring substantial downpours, though the state is already grappling with severe rainfall and flooding.
Good news for farmers! This year's Monsoon rains are forecast to surpass the average, with IMD providing details.
The Southwest Monsoon typically strides into Kerala around June 1, advancing northwards with vigor and enveloping the entire country by mid-July. Normally, the onset in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands precedes this by arriving on May 22. This year, the Monsoon reached Andaman three days earlier than expected, on May 19.
