The main accused in the Dhing gang rape case, Tafzul Islam, has died. The police were taking him to the crime scene to recreate the events at 4 AM. During this time, he tried to escape custody by jumping into a pond. A comprehensive rescue operation lasted for two hours before his body was recovered.
According to the police, Islam attempted to flee by jumping into a pond near the crime scene during the investigation at 4 AM. Fearing he might have drowned, the police immediately launched a search operation. Two hours later, the rescue team recovered Islam's body from the water.
Islam had been arrested on Friday following an intense investigation. He was identified as the third suspect involved in the gang rape. However, the search for the other two perpetrators continues.
SP's Statement
Nagaon SP Swapnaneel Deka commented on the accused's death, saying, 'After interrogating him and taking him to the crime scene, he tried to escape from our custody. While attempting to flee, he fell into a pond. We cordoned off the area and immediately called the SDRF. After the search, we found his body. One of our police constables was injured during the escape attempt. We are still searching for the two other suspects and will arrest them soon.'

Returning from Tuition
An officer stated that the gang rape occurred when the minor was returning home from tuition on Thursday evening in the Dhing area. She was gang raped by three individuals along the way. The minor was found in an unconscious state by the roadside, after which the locals informed the police. The victim has been hospitalized.
Public on the Streets
In the meantime, people from various sections of society took to the streets on Friday morning, demanding the arrest of those responsible. The public's anger was palpable, causing the Student Union to call for a shutdown. Shopkeepers shut their establishments, while social and political organizations demanded stringent action against the culprits and enhanced safety measures for women and girls.
CM's Post
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, 'The horrific incident involving a minor in Dhing is a crime against humanity and has shaken our conscience.'
Sarma wrote on the social media platform 'X', 'We will spare no one and will bring the criminals to justice. I have instructed the Director General of Assam Police to ensure swift action against such monsters at the crime scene.'
