Wayward, Wayward, Wayward... Arshdeep Singh's Misguided Length & Line, Sets Embarrassing Record in T20I

Arshdeep Singh holds the record for the most wickets in T20 Internationals for India. Yet, his performance in the Mohali T20 was not up to the mark, earning an unexpected achievement.

On Thursday (December 11), the second match of the T20 series between India and South Africa took place at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mohali. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Indian bowlers were expected to make significant impacts during the powerplay, but they only secured one wicket.

The left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh had a particularly tough outing. Over the course of 4 overs, he conceded 54 runs without taking a wicket. Moreover, in the 11th over of South Africa’s innings, Arshdeep delivered seven wide balls. Quinton de Kock struck a six on the first ball, followed by two consecutive wides.

The second legal delivery of that over went for no runs. Following this, Arshdeep bowled four consecutive wides, with the subsequent three deliveries yielding 1, 2, and 1 run respectively. Arshdeep's length and line were erratic, further delivering a wide ball. De Kock scored one run on the last ball of the over.

What Record Did Arshdeep Singh Set?

In that over, Arshdeep Singh bowled a total of 13 balls, conceding 18 runs. This tied the record for the most balls in a single T20 International over by a full member team bowler with Afghanistan's Naveen-ul-Haq. Naveen bowled 13 balls in a single over against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2024. South Africa’s Sisanda Magala is second on this list.
