Purvanchal Expressway Accident:

At times, as we set out on a journey, we assume all is well and the path will be smooth. However, amidst the speeding cars on the expressway, a single second of carelessness can turn into a disaster. This holds especially true for drivers of CNG vehicles, who must exercise heightened caution. Unlike petrol-diesel vehicles, CNG cars have distinct operating patterns, making even minor errors potentially hazardous.

The devastating road mishap near Barabanki on the Purvanchal Expressway has once more demonstrated the steep price of even a small mistake on high-speed roads. Just yesterday evening, two families were en route to their destinies—some headed home, others returning to work. Tragically, in a crash involving a WagonR CNG and a Brezza, Constable Javed's entire family was wiped out. Among the five people who perished at the scene of this gruesome accident were two women and three children.

According to reports, Police Constable Javed's family was traveling from Mau to Lucknow when a high-speed Brezza from Delhi smashed into them from behind. The impact caused the CNG tank to explode, resulting in a fierce blaze, leaving onlookers shocked. This cataclysmic event further emphasizes the critical need for comprehensive investigation underway by police, as both cars are now in their custody. It aims to establish whether excessive speed or driver fatigue was to blame.

Such accidents starkly remind us that driving on an expressway isn't solely about speed; it is a test of responsibility. This is pivotal when operating CNG vehicles, where a speck of negligence amplifies dangers manifold. For the safety of your family and a peaceful journey, remembering vital precautions is essential.

On expressways, high-speed driving exerts increased pressure on the CNG tank. Hence, pre-journey checks on the tank, kit, and pipeline for leaks are imperative. Any unusual odor, whistling sound, or hint of gas alerts to have these inspected. Overloading CNG vehicles also intensifies pressure on the tank, especially in crash situations, and can cause the engine to overheat or lose power on extended expressway travel. Avoid excessive luggage when embarking on a CNG trip.

Unlike petrol cars, CNG vehicles have a slower throttle response, causing potential power misses upon sudden acceleration. This becomes perilous in high-speed lanes necessitating drivers to modulate speed based on their car's power output.

Some experts find overtaking and starts smoother in petrol mode, as high-speed overtaking can slow in CNG mode, increasing collision risks. Meanwhile, a variety of CNG-cars now initiate directly on CNG.

If decelerating, signal and gradually move to the left lane, as CNG vehicles may struggle maintaining speed due to load or incline. A left lane slot maintains a safe buffer from fast-approaching vehicles.

The added weight from CNG kits can extend braking distance; hence, always maintain a safe gap from the vehicle ahead, be it expressway or highway. Sudden braking without sufficient distance can spell high risks.

While setting out on a long CNG drive, prepping your route and halting plans is crucial. CNG trips heat the engine incrementally. A brief 5–10 minute pause after every 100–150 kilometers aids engine health.

Maintaining tire pressure is equally vital, even with modern Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) in new vehicles. If absent, manually ensure tire pressure aligns with car manual recommendations before your journey. Incorrect pressures spell grave risks at high speeds due to added CNG car weight.

Stay calm if a sudden CNG mode shutoff occurs mid-journey. Pull over safely, pause, then attempt a petrol mode restart.

Amid high-speed nighttime traffic, ensure headlights, emergency lights, and reflectors are active, as CNG power delivery can be less, necessitating clear movement visibility from behind.

Remember...

While CNG vehicles are cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternatives, using them on expressways demands full preparedness to ensure safety. Even the slightest oversight could trigger accidents, whereas sensible precautions secure a safe drive for you and your family.

Though these safety protocols apply equally to petrol, diesel, or electric vehicles, CNG requires a heightened sense of vigilance due to potential explosive risks in crash events. Such explosions are unpredictable in magnitude and subsequent blaze. Stay alert, drive safely, and make every journey pleasant.
