In a thrilling ODI match between India and South Africa on Sunday in Ranchi, Team India emerged victorious. The hero of this win was none other than Virat Kohli, who played an impressive innings of 135 runs, marking his 52nd century in ODIs. After a month's break, Kohli returned to the field looking dominantly prepared right from the first ball, commanding the bowlers with his remarkable readiness and strategy.
The question lingering in everyone's mind is how Kohli prepares for a series. What is his plan? Allow us to unveil his approach. Having played over 300 ODIs, Kohli arrived early in Ranchi to acclimate to the pitch conditions, spend some sessions batting, and mentally prepare for the challenges ahead.
Words from Virat Kohli
Upon receiving his 44th Player of the Match award in ODIs, Kohli made his approach clear. 'As I have said before, if I am showing up somewhere, I’m giving it 120 percent,' he shared. Kohli has been residing in London’s Notting Hill for nearly two years, as he has retired from Test and T20 formats.
How He Prepares at the Age of 37
Making a comeback after a month-long international hiatus, Kohli's plan for the Ranchi ODI was straightforward. 'I arrived early wanting to understand the conditions a bit more, aimed for two sessions in the day and one in the evening to ensure my preparation was complete. The day before the match, I took a rest as I am 37, so recovery is also crucial,' Kohli explained.
Kohli further shared, ‘In my mind, I visualize the game intensely. As long as I can see myself being intense and sharp while contemplating the game, challenging fielders and bowlers, I know I’m in a good place and can play freely.’
Prior to Ranchi, Kohli hadn't scored an ODI century for nine months and had been out of international cricket for a month. Yet, he approached the series with confidence, having scored an unbeaten 74 in Australia.
Crafting His Innings
Virat Kohli walked in to bat in the fourth over after Yashasvi Jaiswal's dismissal. He reached fifty in 48 balls and completed his century in 102 deliveries. While the pitch initially favored batting, it slowed down over time, but Kohli adapted seamlessly without losing control, finishing his innings with seven sixes.
Training in London – How Kohli Stays Prepared
Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn provided insights into Kohli’s routine in England. ‘I dined with him and got to know about it,’ shared Steyn. 'In London, Kohli has impeccable facilities, particularly at Lords, and he trains regularly in Surrey. His trainer there keeps him well-equipped, consistently throwing him balls. But above all, he remains thoroughly prepared.'
