In a concerning incident near Delft Island on Tuesday morning, five Indian fishermen were injured due to gunfire from the Sri Lankan Navy. Tragically, two of them are reported to be in critical condition, while three others sustained minor injuries. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed a strong reaction to this event, lodging a formal protest and summoning the acting Sri Lankan High Commissioner.
The MEA described the actions as unacceptable, revealing that 13 Indian fishermen, on an early morning venture from Karaikal port, were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the maritime boundary. Reports also emerged of gunfire during the encounter.
According to a statement, while the fishermen were casting their nets near Paruthi Thurai, they found themselves surrounded by a patrol boat of the Sri Lankan Navy. Accused of crossing the maritime boundaries, one fishing boat along with 13 fishermen were taken into custody. As the fishermen attempted to steer their vessel back towards Tamil Nadu, the Sri Lankan Navy reportedly fired, resulting in injuries. One fisherman was struck by a bullet in the leg, while another sustained injuries from a blunt object. They were later handed over to the Kangesanthurai police.
