Sourav Ganguly Joins Candle March With Family Protesting Kolkata Rape and Murder

Massive protests are ongoing in Kolkata regarding the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in the city's hospital. On Wednesday, people demonstrated and demanded justice for the victim. Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly, along with his wife and daughter, joined the protest, lighting candles to demand justice for the victim. They emphasized the need for a safe society and the importance of stopping such heinous crimes.

The nationwide movement led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has continued for ten days. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is questioning the former principal of RG Kar Medical College in connection with the case. Donna Ganguly told the media, ‘We are protesting against rape. We need a safe society. Rape must be stopped.’

Odissi dancer and academy members emphasized the need for a ‘safe society’ and demanded justice for the trainee doctor who fell victim to rape and murder at RG Kar Hospital. His daughter, Sana Ganguly stated, ‘We need justice; this has to stop. Every day, we hear about some rape case, and it’s upsetting that such incidents are still happening in 2024 - this must end.’

Legal protection demanded for doctors

The father-daughter duo lit candles during the protest while fellow demonstrators sang Rabindranath Tagore's song ‘Aguner Parashmani’ as a symbol of unity. The RG Kar Hospital incident sparked nationwide outrage. The medical community is continually protesting, demanding legal protection for doctors. Meanwhile, the CBI investigation into the rape and murder is ongoing, and the accused is in police custody.

Case ongoing in Supreme Court

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court formed a ten-member task force to make recommendations for creating a safe workplace environment. The task force includes Vice Admiral (Surgeon) Arti Sareen and other experts. The court has also directed the CBI to submit a status report on the investigation and requested a status report from the Bengal Government on the August 15 hospital attack case.
