Nepal's Government Honoring Fallen Gen-Z with Martyr Status

With the formation of Sushila Karki's government, Nepal is gradually returning to normalcy. On Monday, the cabinet was expanded to include three newly appointed ministers. In a move that etches a new chapter in Nepal's golden history, the cabinet's first significant action was to declare September 17 as a national day of mourning. This observance is dedicated to honoring the courage and sacrifice of the youths lost during the Gen-Z protests.

The Gen-Z movement in Nepal swiftly toppled the existing government in just four days, setting the stage for a new administration of their choice. Protests erupted across the country, from the capital city, Kathmandu, to Pokhara and Butwal, opposing the Oli government.

During these protests, young activists demanded social and political justice, sacrificing their lives in the process. A total of 72 people lost their lives, including 59 protesters, ten prisoners, and three security personnel. The number of injured has exceeded two thousand.

Gen-Z Protesters to be Honored as Martyrs

Sushila Karki's cabinet has announced that the youths who perished during the protests will be granted martyr status. This decision is seen as a crucial step towards giving their sacrifices national reverence. On September 17, flags across the country will be flown at half-mast in their honor. Additionally, a Gen-Z Memorial Park is planned to commemorate the fallen youths.

In addition, the cabinet has decided to nullify all decisions and proposals made by the previous Oli administration. The aim is to establish clarity in policies and ensure a governance system free from corruption.

Sushila Karki Makes History

September 12, 2025, marked a historic day for Nepal as a woman was entrusted with its leadership for the first time. Backed by the Gen-Z supporters, Sushila Karki became Nepal's first female Prime Minister.
