Flood Crisis in Manipur:
Continuous rains over the last four days have led to severe flooding in Manipur. Rivers have overflowed, forcing people to seek refuge elsewhere. Regions along the Iril and Thoubal rivers are completely submerged. Forecasts show no relief from rain for the next few days.
The pre-monsoon of May 2025 is recorded as the wettest since 1990. Heavy showers continued in June, and now heavy rains persist in September.
The Thoubal River's overflow has submerged areas from Lamla to Tyelou Chana in the capital Imphal and Thoubal districts. The Avang Likai region is largely underwater due to the Iril River. Hundreds of homes are inundated, and farmlands are submerged, destroying crops.
Khetrigao MLA and National People's Party leader Sheikh Nurul Hasan stated the opening of the Dolatbari Barrage gates worsened the situation. He told reporters the gates were opened around 2:30 PM Sunday, intensifying the water flow. Overnight, people tried to reinforce riverbanks with earth to prevent water ingress, but the water kept rising.

Hasan accused the water resources department of a sluggish response, claiming flood relief approved by the central government never reached beneficiaries. Communities fortifying riverbanks with earth is a temporary fix. The government needs to address the issue, but they remain indifferent.
Hasan noted this is the third flood in two years for the region, with 400 homes currently under water. He warned that without immediate action, surrounding areas could also be affected.
Relief camps have been established in safe havens across Imphal East and Thoubal districts. SDRF teams are evacuating stranded individuals.
