Sikkim celebrated its 50th Statehood Day on Friday, with warm congratulations pouring in from Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Chief Minister P.S. Tamang to the people of the state. The day began with a spirited Tricolor rally led by Tamang from MG Road to Paljor Stadium. Prior to this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt greetings to Sikkim's people on their Statehood Day, appreciating the advancements made in various sectors. In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, 'Heartfelt wishes to the people of Sikkim on their Statehood Day! This year marks the special 50th anniversary of Sikkim becoming a state!'

He added, 'Sikkim, known for its tranquil beauty, rich cultural traditions, and hardworking people, has made strides in various fields. The people of this beautiful state continue to thrive.' After gaining protectorate status under the Indian Union post-independence in 1947, Sikkim joined India on May 16, 1975, following a referendum, and has since made significant progress in various socio-economic parameters. Speaking on the occasion, Tamang described the state's five-decade journey as one of inclusive growth and cultural preservation.
'As we commemorate the Golden Jubilee, we reflect on the last five decades with reverence, marked by inclusive development, cultural preservation, and the indomitable spirit of our people,' he said. He reaffirmed the state's commitment to building a Sikkim that is golden, prosperous, and capable, aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a developed India. In his speech, Governor O.P. Mathur remarked, 'This Golden Jubilee is a tribute to the courage of our people, the wisdom of our leaders, and the enduring partnership between Sikkim and the great Indian nation.'

He noted that May 16, 1975, stands as a pivotal moment in the collective memory of the state, when the people of Sikkim decided to become the 22nd state of the Indian Union through democratic will and foresight. On this occasion, the Information and Public Relations Department released a magazine titled 'Sikkim Today—Festivals of Sikkim.' A highlight of the event was the launch of the Visit Sikkim mobile app by the Tourism Department.
