An alarming case of poisoning and theft unfolded on the Sambalpur Jammu Tawi train involving Jharkhand pilgrims. While returning from the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, two travelers were offered sweets and snacks by a man introducing himself as a retired soldier. Both passengers fell unconscious shortly afterward, allowing the assailant to flee with their gold jewelry, mobile phones, cash, and belongings.
Reports indicate that 28 passengers from Ramgarh and Ranchi districts of Jharkhand embarked on a Vaishno Devi pilgrimage on February 3. During their return journey, they were in the S6 coach of the Sambalpur Jammu Tawi train, occupying seats 9 and 12.
Robbery of Pilgrims on Jammu Tawi Train
As the train reached Ludhiana station, a man stated to be a 'Sardar Ji' boarded and asked the passengers for a seat. Travelers Suresh Sahu and Pradeep Sahu accommodated him on their seats.
Posing as a retired soldier, the man served them sweets as 'prasad'. Out of respect, both passengers consumed them and soon fell unconscious. Seizing the opportunity, the thief vanished with their gold chains, phones, money, and other valuables.
By the time fellow passengers realized what had occurred, it was too late. The victims' nephew, Uttam Sahu, informed the railway authorities. Consequently, the unconscious travelers were removed at Etawah railway station and admitted to the district hospital.
Police Initiate Investigation
After regaining consciousness, the travelers reported being robbed of nearly one lakh rupees. Etawah GRP registered the case and started an investigation. Dr. Shiv Kumar from the hospital confirmed that the passengers had been drugged. Both individuals are currently undergoing treatment but are out of danger.
