After the counting of votes for the district council and block committee elections in Punjab, the initial results have been announced. The State Election Commission completed the counting process across all centers on Tuesday. The Aam Aadmi Party contested these elections to strengthen its hold in the state.
The ruling party secured a majority in the 177 officially announced district council seats and 2097 block committee seats.
Contesting parties, including Congress, Akali Dal, and BJP, faced setbacks in several seats. The administration ensured tight security arrangements for a peaceful counting process.
AAP's Significant Victory in District Councils
The election process began for a total of 346 district council zones, out of which results for 177 have been declared. AAP won 98 seats and had 22 candidates elected unopposed, resulting in a total of 120 seats.
Meanwhile, Congress secured 27 seats, and Shiromani Akali Dal gained 21 seats. The Bahujan Samaj Party won 3 seats, whereas the Bharatiya Janata Party and CPI(M) have yet to open their account. In one zone in Khadoor Sahib, no valid nominations were found.
The Math Behind Block Committee Results
Out of a total of 2838 block committee seats, candidates were elected unopposed in 352, with voting taking place for 2486 zones. Official results have declared 2097 seats so far. AAP has claimed victory in 892 seats and, with 339 unopposed, holds a total of 1231 seats. Congress won 419 seats and, adding 3 unopposed, has 422 seats. Akali Dal won 253 seats, BJP 49, and BSP 26. Independent candidates claimed a total of 116 seats.
Awaiting Final Figures
The final tally of election results is still awaited. As counting continues, results for the remaining seats are gradually emerging. Current trends and outcomes clearly indicate AAP's growing influence in Punjab politics. The results pose a challenge for BJP and other smaller parties. Six independent candidates have also made their mark in the district council. Only once the final figures are announced will the complete picture be revealed.
