During Wednesday's parliamentary session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the house. He responded to the discussion on the motion of thanks to the President's address in the Rajya Sabha. Amidst Modi's address, the opposition began a fervent uproar. Opposition MPs were shouting during the proceedings. After a while of chaos, they staged a walkout and exited the parliamentary building.
The walkout by the opposition was condemned by Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, who said it hurt the sentiments of the nation's 1.4 billion people. 'Today, they have not just left the House, but abandoned dignity. It is not just an affront to us, but to the House. They haven't turned their back on me, but on the Constitution of India. I am deeply saddened by this mockery of our Constitution. I hope they will introspect.'
Disrespecting the Constitution
'The Leader of the Opposition has not disrespected me, but the Constitution they swore to uphold,' said the Rajya Sabha Speaker. 'How can this be, in the upper house? We are to guide the nation. I denounce their conduct. The essence of the House means if you have had your say, listen to the ruling party too.'
Unable to Digest the Mandate
Following Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also sharply criticized the opposition's walkout. He said, 'Shouting, creating a racket, and then running away from the battlefield, this seems to be their fate. They are unable to stomach the mandate given by 1.4 billion citizens of the country.'
Bound by Duty - PM Modi
PM Modi further stated, 'All their tactics failed yesterday. Today, they didn't even have the courage to fight. I am duty-bound. A servant of the people. He mentioned fertilizers, acknowledging that global crises have caused problems, but asserted that by providing a subsidy of 12,000 crore rupees, they ensured farmers were not affected.'
