The principal suspect in the Delhi BMW case, Gagandeep Kaur, is remanded to two days of judicial custody. Following her arrest on Monday, she was presented before a judge. Initially taken to the Patiala House Court, she had to be taken to the judge’s residence as the courts had closed for the day. The accused is being represented by senior advocate Vikas Pahwa.

Pahwa filed a bail application for Gagandeep, citing a 10-hour FIR delay, a DCP press conference, and CCTV footage, along with statements from the injured and witnesses as grounds for bail. The court has issued a notice to the Delhi Police, with a hearing set for September 17, coinciding with the end of Gagandeep’s judicial custody.

Before this, Additional DCP Abhimanyu Poswal stated that the police suspected that the delay in treatment was due to the distance from the accident site to the hospital. However, Gagandeep clarified that a state of panic overwhelmed her after the accident. She chose to take Navjot Singh to the same hospital where her children were treated during the pandemic as she trusted their services completely.

Meanwhile, the hospital management released a statement, confirming a medico-legal case involving a road accident had been registered on the night of September 14. A 50-year-old man was declared dead on arrival, and his wife was treated and referred upon the family’s request. Two other patients also received care, emphasizing the hospital's equality in treatment for all.

Navjot Singh's father dismissed these claims, stating, “As a former Air Force officer, I am familiar with the treatment standards of various hospitals. This was orchestrated to shield the accused. They took my son's life. I’ve lost the backbone of my family. He was exceptionally wise, having spoken at the United Nations and accompanied the Finance Minister on numerous trips abroad.”

On the question of not requesting police custody for Gagandeep, ADCP explained that eyewitness statements were recorded and CCTV footage secured. Independent evidence verified the accused’s statements, leaving only legal proceedings pending against her husband, Parikshit Makkar, currently hospitalized. Legal action will resume post his discharge.

According to police sources, five passengers were in the BMW at the time of the accident. Gagandeep was driving with her 6-year-old daughter seated in front. Her husband Parikshit, their 4-year-old son, and the caretaker sat in the back. The car hit a divider and overturned, colliding with the bike of Navjot Singh, a Deputy Secretary at the Finance Ministry, who then struck a bus passing by.

Gagandeep informed the police she attempted to aid Navjot and his wife after the accident, leaving her injured daughter to prioritize their rescue. She selected the Mukherji Nagar hospital due to familiarity during the COVID period when her children were treated there. She claimed bystanders helped her out of the car amidst the chaos, leaving her in shock.

Eyewitness Gulfaam, a tempo driver, shared that passers-by helped Navjot and his wife into his van for transportation. Gagandeep arrived shortly after and insisted on going to GTB Nagar Hospital, 19 kilometers away. Sanjeevkaur, Navjot's wife, stated they repeatedly urged for a nearby hospital due to Navjot’s unconscious state, yet were taken further away.

During the accident, 18-year-old laborer Ankit exemplified humanity by rescuing the trapped children from the BMW amidst spectators filming the scene. Rooted in empathy, he first pulled the bloodied 6-year-old girl to safety, followed by the boy and the caretaker, despite the onlookers’ indifference.

The family of Hari Nagar resident Navjot Singh has been left devastated by his demise. His mother recounts, “When the doctor called us from Navjot’s phone, we hoped to hear his voice. They shattered us with the devastating news. We felt directionless, questioning if taking him to AIIMS Trauma Center or Army Hospital could have saved him.”
