The city of Murshidabad in West Bengal is making headlines again, and this time it's due to intense violence triggered by the Wakf law. Protestors halted trains and pelted stones at the police. Chaos erupted in Shamsherganj, 10 km from Murshidabad, as rioters targeted and vandalized homes. Today, the aftermath leaves Hindu families grappling with the loss of their businesses and shops.

The mob targeted these homes and showed no mercy in their destruction. Just 500 meters from Shamsherganj police station, homes and shops were ransacked, leaving victims in shock. Claims suggest that calls to the police went unanswered as the mob wreaked havoc for hours. The police eventually arrived to assess the damage, but the atmosphere remains tense in Murshidabad.

Theft and Destruction by the Mob

Manju Bhagat recounted that initially, the mob tried breaching the main entrance. After failing, they forced their way inside from the back, first destroying the bike and then wreaking havoc in the rooms. They absconded with costly items, reducing the house to rubble. At the time, only her mother and two daughters were at home.

'Our Family Trembled in Fear...'

Manju shared that the entire family was shivering in fear, resorting to prayers. They were on the rooftop, hiding, with their fate hanging by a thread. They were chanting and praying for the mob to leave their home. She was terrified about her daughters' safety, knowing any misfortune could befall them at any moment. Her husband and son were trapped at their shop during the ordeal, and Manju questions whether the police could restore her daughters' dignity if anything had happened. Eventually, the police arrived, but only after the destruction was complete, despite the station being a mere few minutes away.

'Dad Was at the Shop, and They Surrounded Our Home'

Tanya Bhagat described that their home was encircled, with stones thrown at the glass windows. Their father was at the shop, adding to their anxiety. They managed to reach the upper floor in time to secure themselves, as there was no other escape from leaving the house. Some attackers had already made it to the roof, initially targeting their glass. They watched silently, knowing that speaking up could result in them being discovered by the mob, with dire consequences.
