The plains of North India are not the only ones feeling the scorching heat, as even the hilly states are experiencing unusually high temperatures this year. The sweltering heat in the mountainous regions has left residents distressed. The capital of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla, has shattered a 10-year record with temperatures soaring above 30 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange heatwave alert for several areas in Himachal Pradesh for the next 24 hours and forecasts potential rainfall in some parts of the state including Shimala on May 29.
Heatwave engulfs Himachal Pradesh
Amidst the soaring temperatures, Shimla recorded a maximum of 30.6 degrees Celsius in the last 24 hours. This is a first since 2014, indicating a possibility that the 2010 record high of 32.4 degrees Celsius could soon be broken. According to weather officials, the activation of the Western Disturbance from May 29 may bring rainfall and hailstorms to some areas of Himachal Pradesh.
The director of the Meteorological Department, Surendra Pal, indicated that Una in Himachal Pradesh recorded a high of 44 degrees, while the capital Shimla reported a high of 30.6 degrees, the hottest in a decade. He warned of intense heat and possible dust storms over the next 24 hours, but also noted the likelihood of a temperature drop from May 29 due to rain and hailstorms. Meanwhile, people from plains are flocking to Shimla for respite from the heat. Shimla becomes packed with tourists over the weekends. Visitors say that while temperatures in the plains exceed 44 degrees, Shimla offers some relief with temperatures around 30 degrees and cool breezes.
