Amidst the current turmoil in Bangladesh, journalists and human rights defenders are becoming direct targets. Sushant Das Gupta has accused a mob of religious extremists for attacking his ancestral home in Bangladesh, causing extensive damage and looting.
Sushant Das Gupta claims that on Friday, his home was vandalized and looted while his family fortunately escaped unharmed. He places the blame directly on the government led by Mohammad Yunus.
Currently residing in the United Kingdom, Sushant Das Gupta has been practicing journalism from abroad for the past three years. He believes his home was deliberately targeted amid the recent unrest in Bangladesh.
Rampant Vandalism at Home
According to Sushant Das Gupta, a furious mob barged into his home and looted extensively. He stated, “The mob completely destroyed my home, taking away everything. This is because I am vocally active on social media, often speaking against the unlawful Yunus government. It was an attempt to intimidate me into silence.”
He revealed that during the attack, his sister and niece were at home, but fortunately, they had left about 30 minutes before the assault. Gupta believes had they stayed a bit longer, their lives could have been endangered.
Serious Allegations Against Yunus's Government
Regarding those responsible for the attack, Sushant Das Gupta has made serious accusations. He claims individuals affiliated with Yunus's government orchestrated the assault. According to him, a political group identifying with Dr. Yunus is involved in such attacks.
Gupta also alleged that his collision with Yunus’s government is not new. Being a publisher and editor of a newspaper, his critical reporting led to the annulment of his newspaper's declaration by the government. Last year, the government banned the print newspaper he was operating, a repercussion of exposing alleged financial corruption linked to Dr. Yunus. As of now, there has been no official response from the Bangladeshi government regarding these accusations.
