President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia will be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations. During his visit to India, there is potential for the finalization of the BrahMos missile deal between India and Indonesia. Sources indicate that Indonesia's Defense Ministry has sent an official communiqué to the Indian Embassy in Jakarta concerning a $450 million deal for the BrahMos missile, sparking speculation that the official agreement will be confirmed during the Indonesian President's visit to New Delhi.
India is working to make this deal more convenient for Indonesia by discussing potential loans through the State Bank of India and other national banks. Talks are reportedly in progress to finalize the loan procedures.
A New Global Identity for India
Should this agreement be inked, India stands to earn a prestigious new reputation in the worldwide defense export arena. Previously, in April 2023, India entered a momentous defense pact with the Philippines, involving a $375 million deal for three missiles capable of a range of 290 kilometers and a speed of 2.8 Mach, significantly enhancing the defense capabilities of the Philippines.
Strengthened Bilateral Relations
The BrahMos missile agreement will fortify defense ties between India and Indonesia. If finalized during the Indonesian President's visit, this deal will significantly bolster bilateral relations between the two nations.
Moreover, it will set a new benchmark for India's defense trade. Additionally, it will enhance India's status as a technological exporter in the Indo-Pacific region. Notably, Indonesia joined the BRICS in January 2024.
