Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a landmark interview with Aaj Tak, shared insights on the recent Chabahar agreement between Iran and India. He conveyed that the Chabahar agreement is monumental for India's economy. In addressing America's warnings about the accord, PM Modi firmly stated that India will make decisions based on its own interests, not influenced by a third party.
During the interview by India Today Group's News Director Rahul Kanwal, PM Modi was asked to reflect beyond Indian politics and look at the global picture, highlighting ongoing situations like the Russia-Ukraine crisis, the conflict between Israel and Hamas, and rising tensions with Iran. In light of India's evolution to becoming the world's fifth-largest economy from the eleventh in five years, Kanwal queried PM Modi’s perspective on India’s emerging role on the global stage in the future.
PM Modi responded, 'Why should we perceive ourselves in such a manner? What is fundamental? Our previous narrative was maintaining distance, but I propose we focus on proximity now. Globally, the challenge is no longer about distancing but about bridging gaps.'
Referring to the Chabahar agreement with Iran, PM Modi remarked, 'A significant decision unfolded in Iran yesterday; it's headline news in Indian newspapers. With my minister in Chabahar, Iran, the final agreement of the Chabahar Port was established, connecting Central Asia with a vast economic opportunity. What role does a high-table play amidst global turmoil when such crucial agreements like Chabahar are being finalized?'
PM Modi Addresses America's Warning
India recently signed an agreement with Iran concerning Chabahar, assigning India operational duties for the next decade. The U.S. indicated that nations considering business with Iran should be aware of potential risks, including sanctions.
On this American caution, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar plainly stated that the Chabahar agreement benefits the entire region and should not be stifled by narrow viewpoints.
In his interview with Aaj Tak, PM Modi indirectly answered America's alert by saying, 'We make decisions for ourselves, not based on others. If someone dislikes this, should it impede our discussions? Not at all. I will talk with everyone. If President Putin praises me, that does not restrain me from telling him, ‘This is not the time for war.’ Even Ukraine holds a similar trust in me, in India.'
On balancing relations with America and Russia, PM Modi emphasized, 'Such balance is achieved when intentions are clear and trusted. There's no need for covert actions or seeking American validation. Similarly, if cheaper petroleum from Russia is necessary, we will acquire it. I don’t hide, and I run my country on my terms.'
