The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has made explosive allegations concerning MP Gaurav Gogoi's British wife, referencing a statement by senior Congress leader Ripun Bora. According to Assam's CM, Ripun Bora has made shocking confessions. On social media platform X, Sarma posted, 'Yesterday, senior Congress leader Ripun Bora made a startling confession— he admitted that Gaurav Gogoi's British wife was indeed on the payroll of the Pakistani government.'

He further wrote, 'If true, this raises extremely serious and concerning questions about India's national security. The continuous presence of someone associated with a hostile nation— within the immediate family circle of an MP— is a grave and unacceptable threat to the integrity of India's institutions. We were not aware of this shocking information before. Now that it has come to light, we are looking into this matter with utmost seriousness. India's national security cannot be compromised. We will record Ripun Bora's statement and take further action regarding this matter.'

However, on May 25, the Congress party rejected the allegations made by Assam CM about Gaurav Gogoi and his wife, dismissing them as politically motivated attacks. Congress stated that these accusations by Himanta Biswa Sarma stem from his growing insecurities about the 2026 assembly elections. On Sunday, Assam's Congress unit declared that due to feeling insecure, CM Sarma is targeting Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi over alleged relations with Pakistan. Ripun Bora, whose alleged statement is the basis for these serious charges by Himanta Biswa Sarma against Gaurav Gogoi and his wife, told reporters, 'The Chief Minister appears worried that if Congress fields Gaurav Gogoi as their candidate for Chief Minister, the BJP might lose the 2026 assembly elections.'

Ripun Bora Questions the Investigative Scope

Ripun Bora commented that CM Sarma regards Gaurav Gogoi as his main competitor. He noted that despite the alleged use of money power, muscle, and state machinery by the BJP, Himanta Biswa Sarma was unable to prevent Gaurav Gogoi from winning the Jorhat parliamentary seat in 2024. He further mentioned that Sarma's concerns grew after Gogoi's reappointment as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, which underscores Gogoi's rising political stature. Bora also questioned the scope of the investigation, stating that the special investigation team appointed for the case has jurisdiction limited to Assam and lacks authority to investigate matters within Pakistan or even within the Indian Embassy in that country.

Allegedly, Gaurav Gogoi was advised by Ripun Bora not to respond to Sarma's allegations on social media or other platforms, insisting that Gogoi is answerable to the investigators, not the Chief Minister. Meanwhile, Gaurav Gogoi has shifted his focus to governance-related issues. While speaking to journalists in Jorhat, he referred to his letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the operation of an illegal coal syndicate in Assam and Meghalaya. He alleged that neither the Assam government nor the Meghalaya government has taken decisive action against illegal coal mining and trading, which has resulted in several fatalities.
