Floods Ravage 86 Areas in Manipur, Devastation Strikes Four Northeast States

Following cyclone Remal, northeastern states including Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Assam, and Meghalaya are facing havoc. In Manipur's Imphal Valley, heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding affecting thousands. According to an official report released Wednesday, the overflowing Imphal River has caused inundation of several localities and hundreds of homes.

Officials state that rising water levels from the Nambul River have led to flooding across at least 86 areas including Khuman Lampak, Nagarm, Sagolband, Uripok, Keishamthong, and Paona in Imphal West district. The embankment near the Imphal River has collapsed near areas like Keraing, Khabam, and Lairiengbam Leikai in Imphal East district, resulting in total submersion of hundreds of homes.

NDRF Teams Arrive in Imphal for Rescue Operations

An official mentioned, "Severe impact has been reported in Heingang and Khurai assembly constituors in Imphal East district. In many places, floodwaters have reached chest height."

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team led a rescue operation, landing in Imphal around 10 PM via a special Air Force flight.

Chief Minister's Statement

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh mentions, "Citizens and animals have been affected due to the collapse of river embankments in several localities. State government officials, security forces, NDRF personnel, and local volunteers are all striving to provide relief to those affected. People trapped in the flood are being safely evacuated by boats."

Meanwhile, officials reported that the Irang Bailey Bridge on National Highway 37, connecting Imphal and Silchar, has collapsed, severing road connection.

The Office of the SP in Imphal East released a statement asking the public not to hinder the relief efforts by crowding the sites and creating obstructions, following persistent rains that drowned various areas. Police, in coordination with other agencies, are aiding in the evacuation of stranded persons.

Rain and Landslides Claim 38 Lives across Northeastern States

Cyclone Remal's onset has touched nearly all northeastern states, causing extensive impact on roads and railway communications. Heavy rains and landslides have claimed the lives of 38 citizens across four states. Mizoram reports 29 casualties, while Nagaland, Assam, and Meghalaya have 4, 3, and 2 deaths, respectively.

In Aizawl, recovery teams have retrieved 25 bodies from a mine site between Meltham and Hlimen, with more still trapped under debris. Landslides in Salem, Aibawk, Lunglei, Kelhis, and Falkawn in the region have resulted in six fatalities, with several reported missing.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, a school bus in Sonitpur's Dhekiajuli was struck by a falling tree branch, injuring 12 students. Morigaon reported five injuries in separate incidents. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reviewed the emergent situation in the state.
