Fire in Aircraft Engine After Takeoff... Delta Airlines Flight Makes Mid-Air U-Turn, VIDEO

A Delta Air Lines flight heading to Atlanta made an emergency landing shortly after taking off from Los Angeles due to the left engine catching fire. All passengers were safe. The FAA has begun an investigation. This marks the second engine fire incident for Delta this year.

A Delta Air Lines flight DL446 departing from Los Angeles International Airport to Atlanta had to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff on Friday. Reports state that the flight was operated by a 24-year-old Boeing 767-400 (registration N836MH), and as soon as it departed, flames were observed erupting from its left engine.

According to Aviation A2Z, pilots detected signs of an engine fire during the flight. Video footage captured from the ground showed flames streaking from the left engine, leaving spectators stunned. Recognizing the severity, pilots declared an emergency and coordinated with Air Traffic Control (ATC) to bring the aircraft back safely.

Fire Contained After Landing

The plane initially flew over the Pacific Ocean, then turned back, passing over the Downey and Paramount areas. Throughout, its altitude and speed remained stable as all safety checklists were diligently followed. Emergency crews were on standby at landing, confirming the fire was contained. Fortunately, no passengers or crew members sustained any injuries.

Emergency Landing Conducted at Los Angeles Airport

Speaking to the BBC, a Delta spokesperson said, “Delta flight 446 returned to Los Angeles Airport shortly after takeoff due to signs of an issue with the left engine.” Passengers mentioned being informed by the captain that the fire team was inspecting the engine. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into this engine fire incident. The aircraft is powered by General Electric CF6 engines.

A Second Engine Fire Incident

It is noteworthy that this is the second instance of an engine fire on a Delta Air Lines flight this year. Previously, on January 1st, Delta flight DL105, also en route from Atlanta to São Paulo, Brazil, had to return shortly after takeoff when flames erupted from the left engine.
