In the 2019 elections, Delhi exercised its voting rights in the sixth phase for all seven seats, which yielded a BJP victory across the board. Congress and AAP had faced defeat. This time around, AAP and Congress have aligned to present joint candidates as they contest against BJP.
'BJP garnered 56 percent votes in 2019'
BJP had secured 56.9 percent of votes in Delhi during the 2019 general elections. Congress had 22.6 percent, and AAP had 18.2 percent. In all of the Lok Sabha seats, the combined vote share of Congress and AAP candidates did not exceed that of the BJP. However, BJP has since replaced the tickets of six of their MPs, meaning six new faces will be contesting, with Manoj Tiwari’s ticket being repeated.
'BJP replaces tickets for six MPs'
BJP has introduced new candidates: Harsh Malhotra from East Delhi, Kamaljit Sahrawat from West Delhi, Yogendra Chandolia from Northwest Delhi, Praveen Khandelwal from Chandni Chowk, Bansuri Swaraj from New Delhi, Manoj Tiwari from Northeast Delhi, and Ramvir Singh Bidhuri for South Delhi. Both the 2014 and 2019 elections had seen BJP prevail in all seven seats.
'AAP announces four candidates'
AAP, part of the India block, is fielding candidates in four Delhi seats, while Congress has been allotted three. AAP has announced its candidates: Kuldeep Kumar from the East Lok Sabha seat, Somnath Bharti from New Delhi, Sahiram Pehelwan from South Delhi, and former MP Mahabal Mishra for West Delhi. Neither Congress nor AAP managed to open their account in the previous two elections.
Meanwhile, Congress has yet to declare their candidates. The party has been deliberating on potential candidates for an extended period.
