The Lok Sabha is poised for a pivotal debate starting Tuesday, focusing on long-pending electoral reforms. This crucial discussion will be initiated by Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. In reality, the opposition had been demanding a conversation on Specific Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral lists since the monsoon session. However, the government argued that the Election Commission is an independent, autonomous and constitutional body. Therefore, it proposed a discussion on comprehensive 'electoral reforms', which the opposition accepted. The opposition claims that millions of names have been suddenly added or removed from voter lists in several recent state elections, raising questions about fairness. However, the government and the Election Commission have dismissed these allegations.
BJP's Defenders: A Team of Stalwarts
Spearheading the debate for the ruling BJP will be senior MPs and former IAS officer Nishikant Dubey, former Union Minister P.P. Chaudhary, former Kolkata High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, and Sanjay Jaiswal. These leaders will robustly present the government's stance on electoral reforms.
Congress's Formidable Line-up
Meanwhile, Congress will field a powerful lineup besides Rahul Gandhi, featuring K.C. Venugopal, Manish Tewari, Varsha Gaikwad, Mohammad Javed, Ujjwal Raman Singh, Esa Khan, Ravi Mallu, Imran Masood, Gopal Padvi, and Jothimani among 11 MPs, contributing to this vital discussion.
