China has successfully launched its first supercarrier into the sea. Named after the Fujian province, this third aircraft carrier is the most advanced outside of the United States. Meet the Fujian, China’s trailblazing catapult carrier, fully developed within its shores.
The Fujian supercarrier, classified as a Type-003 aircraft carrier, displaces 71,875 tons. Stretching 316 meters in length, this warship stands at an imposing height of 249 feet. Its catapult-assisted launch system signifies a monumental leap, with fighter jets taking off and landing with the aid of a catapult mechanism akin to a slingshot.

This represents a pinnacle of modern and deadly maritime force for China. The carrier boasts three short runways for fighter jet operations, masked beneath tent-like structures in recent photographs. Its construction started back in 2018 at the Jiangnan Shipyard near Shanghai.
What formidable capabilities does this battleship hold, and what weaponry and jets will it deploy?
For self-defense, the warship will be equipped with the HQ-10 short-range surface-to-air missile system and H/PJ-11 30mm autocannons. Its state-of-the-art radar system boasts rectangular panels, capable of long-range missile and jet tracking and target locking.
It is speculated that China will station its J-15B fighter jets aboard the vessel, along with the next-generation J-35 fighters. The J-15D electronic warfare jet will also be at hand for deployment as needed. In addition, the KJ-600 AEWC aircraft will be stationed for reconnaissance at sea. Not stopping there, the Fujian is also set to deploy Z-8/18 utility and ASW helicopters, as well as the new Z-20 medium helicopter.

The US Department of Defense claimed in June 2022 that while China could launch the vessel, it would take another year and a half for the aircraft carrier to be fully operational. This was stated following the release of satellite images of the warship being constructed by Planet Labs. Presently, the battleship is set to spend the next year undergoing sea trials before joining the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).
China’s military modernization includes this carrier, aiming to expand its regional influence. Though the Chinese Navy already claims the title of the largest by ship count, in terms of capabilities, it still trails behind the US Navy. However, when it comes to the number of aircraft carriers, the US Navy is considered the leading naval force globally.

The waters surrounding China are subject to claims by six countries, making them strategically significant. They are abundant in oil and gas reserves, yet the maritime area is quickly depleting in fish stocks due to hunting and trade. China has been assertively laying claim to these seas.
The US Navy has challenged China’s unlawful maritime activities, conducting reconnaissance on the man-made islands and military bases established by China. In the realm of international trade routes, the US continues regular naval exercises to ensure security and counteract potential encroachments.
