A major political shuffle is brewing in Bihar. According to sources, Bihar's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may head to the Rajya Sabha. The big question arises, who will take charge after Nitish Kumar leaves for Rajya Sabha?
Sources within JDU suggest that Nitish Kumar has prepared for his Rajya Sabha nomination. The party has already collected all the nomination papers, and he will be filing them tomorrow. Reports also say that Nitish Kumar might resign from his Chief Minister's post after March 16, remaining the Chief Minister until the Rajya Sabha elections on March 16.
In the 2025 Bihar assembly elections, BJP maintained dominance with 89 seats, while Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JDU followed with 85 seats. The NDA coalition, with Chirag Paswan's party (LJP-RV), Jitan Ram Manjhi's HAM, and Upendra Kushwaha’s RLM, played a significant role.
Who will become Bihar's CM after Nitish Kumar?
It is clear that BJP tops the power ladder in Bihar politics. Once Nitish Kumar leaves, BJP might take command. This would be a monumental turn in Bihar’s history, as a BJP leader would sit on the chief minister's chair after a long time.
Nishant Kumar to be Deputy CM!
Sources indicate that Nishant Kumar, Nitish Kumar's son, is set to take on crucial responsibilities. He might be appointed as Bihar's Deputy CM.
One person, two houses—Not possible
The Indian constitution prohibits a person from being a member of two houses simultaneously. Currently, Nitish Kumar is a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and the state's Chief Minister. If he is sent to the Rajya Sabha, he must resign from the Bihar Assembly and his role as Chief Minister.

Resignation of the Chief Minister means the entire Cabinet's resignation
Technically, when a Chief Minister resigns, it translates to the resignation of the entire Cabinet. Hence, when the position becomes vacant, the ruling coalition (NDA) must elect a new leader—this leader might emerge from either BJP or JDU.
