After Chhangur Baba's arrest in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, the sinister layers behind the country's illegal conversion schemes are being peeled back one by one. The investigation, which started in Agra, has dramatically widened, encompassing regions like Kolkata, Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Uttarakhand. Police have detained 10 suspects across six states.
Police investigations reveal that this gang drew inspiration from infamous terrorist outfits such as the Babbar Khalsa International and Lashkar-e-Taiba. They brainwashed young girls under the guise of ISIS modules, leading them to conversion. According to the police, the gang's scheme extended beyond just religious conversion; it aimed at radicalizing these individuals, potentially jeopardizing national security.
Why did the family shockingly react to a photo with AK-47?
This harrowing tale began in March 2025 with the disappearance of two sisters from Agra. Discovering the elder sister via social media, her profile image with an AK-47 sent shivers down the spine of all who saw it. This was the turning point that shed light on the entire network. Investigations revealed that both sisters were hidden in a Muslim-majority neighborhood of Kolkata.
Their names were altered, and marriage preparations were underway. Further stimulus for the eldest came from a friend originating from Udhampur, Jammu & Kashmir. It took more than three months for the Uttar Pradesh police to rescue the sisters from Kolkata's clutches.
Why were minor girls targeted?
The detained suspects include: Rehman Qureshi from Agra, Abu Talib from Muzaffarnagar, Ali Hasan and Osama from Kolkata, Abdul Rehman from Dehradun, Mohammad Ali and Junaid Qureshi from Jaipur, Mustafa from Delhi, and Ayesha from Goa. Police interrogation has unveiled that the gang specifically targeted minor girls to manipulate them emotionally.
This led to 'Love Jihad' conversions followed by indoctrinations into religious radicalism. The gang received significant international funding to facilitate these activities, with financial backings from countries like the UAE, Canada, London, and the USA. Funds were funneled into India through hawala networks and digital means.

Chhangur Baba's stay in a relative of Dawood's hotel
Further investigations led to active modules across various states. Agra Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar is utilizing the cyber cell and economic crime branch to further track this funding web. Chhangur Baba's network seems to have links stretching even further. The hotel situated in Lucknow, where Chhangur resided, allegedly owned by a close relative of Dawood Ibrahim, is now under scrutiny.
However, the hotel management denied prior knowledge of Chhangur's activities, but investigative agencies are pursuing this lead meticulously. This vast racket's tentacles stretch beyond national borders, with confirmed ties to ISI of Pakistan. India's security agencies have swung into action with heightened urgency, broadening the scope of their investigation.
