Tamil superstar Surya is no stranger to Hindi film lovers. Especially post the pan-India success of 'Vikram', audiences have come to know him well. During the lockdown, his films 'Soorarai Pottru' and 'Jai Bhim' were widely viewed on OTT platforms.
Following these hits, Surya's face became familiar in the Hindi film circuit. Yet, a significant Hindi blockbuster still escapes him. His last pan-India endeavor 'Kanguva' received negative responses even in its original Tamil version. However, Surya is renewing his pan-India efforts with his new film 'Retro', whose trailer has just been launched.
Surya Embraces a Rowdy Avatar in 'Retro'
In his latest film, Surya dons the role of a gangster ready to go to any lengths to reclaim lost love. The film is directed by Karthik Subbaraj, known for films like 'Jigarthanda', Rajinikanth's 'Petta', and Dhanush's 'Jagame Thandhiram'.

Karthik brings Surya to the screen in a late 80s and 90s gangster style. Upon the release of Surya's first look, fans were elated. Joining him in the film is Pooja Hegde, a popular actress in the South. In 'Retro's trailer, Surya's action scenes exude his unique gangster flair and charm. It's a fresh appearance after quite a while.
Surya Seeks Success in Hindi Cinema
The trailer of 'Retro' has been released in Hindi as well. Surya aims to captivate Hindi audiences through this film. However, the buzz around it among Hindi viewers is barely noticeable. The dialogues and songs in the Hindi trailer lack authenticity and fail to connect. Watch the 'Retro' trailer here:
Surya's debut Hindi film 'Rakht Charitra 2' has its own cult following. His Tamil films remakes like 'Singam', 'Force', and 'Ghajini' transformed into successful Hindi movies. During the lockdown, his OTT releases once again impressed audiences. However, his recent release 'Kanguva' failed to impress in Hindi. Even in Tamil, it received critical negative feedback and as a result, despite a big budget, it vanished from theaters within the first week. The reviews were so adverse that having Bollywood star Bobby Deol on board didn't salvage 'Kanguva'.
Surya, a renowned Tamil star and a powerhouse actor, hasn't seen his stardom shine as bright lately as other stars find success. The Tamil industry too requires significant pan-India success for greater prominence. While names like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Vijay are recognised pan-India, few have replicated their success at that scale.

The Tamil industry saw Dhanush gain pan-India popularity, yet struggles with box office hits persist. It will be intriguing to see how Surya's new film 'Retro' is received by Hindi audiences. The movie hits theaters on May 1st.
