Prime Minister Modi initiated a special discussion in the Lok Sabha, commemorating the 150th anniversary of 'Vande Mataram'. In his address, he deeply explored the national song's historical significance, its cultural roots, its role in the freedom struggle, and its impact on contemporary India. Modi articulated that 'Vande Mataram' is not just a song but an invigorating force that gave the nation courage, unity, and a strong will even in the darkness of colonization.

Criticism of Congress:

During the discussion, PM Modi targeted Congress, citing how on October 15th, 1936, Mohammed Ali Jinnah opposed 'Vande Mataram' and the Congress leadership faltered under pressure. According to Modi, Congress leader Jawaharlal Nehru, instead of retaliating, questioned the song's background, suggesting that the context of 'Anandamath' could hurt Muslim sentiments. Consequently, Congress reviewed the song's use, which faced nationwide protests, ultimately leading to its restriction by the party, which, as PM noted, succumbed to the Muslim League's demands.

Accusations of Appeasement and Ideological Confusion:

Modi accused Congress of practicing appeasement politics, contributing to the partition mentality. He noted that the same ideology plagued the country with division. "The INC transformed into an MNC," he expressed. The PM further asserted that whenever Congress backs a group, disputes over 'Vande Mataram' arise, whereas during national crises, the spirit of 'Vande Mataram' unites and empowers the nation.

A River of Millennia-Old Cultural Consciousness:

Modi remarked that the roots of 'Vande Mataram' are embedded not in any political movement but in India’s ancient cultural consciousness. He explained that its sentiment is shared across Indian tradition, from the Vedas to the Ramayana, exemplifying with "Mata Bhumih Putro Aham Prithivya" and Ram's "Janani Janmabhumishcha Svargadapi Gariyasi," asserting that 'Vande Mataram' is the modern embodiment of these ancient sentiments.

British Divide and Rule Started in Bengal:

In his speech, PM Modi revealed how the British, intimidated by the 1857 revolt, initiated their divisive policy in Bengal to prevent unified opposition. He stated that Bengal is where 'Vande Mataram' originated, and the British made efforts to dismantle its power.

Repression on 'Vande Mataram' Processions:

Modi shared fascinating anecdotes from history, including an incident in 1906 where the British tried to halt a 'Vande Mataram' procession in Barisal. This led to a massive outcry with 10,000 people taking to the streets. He referenced a colonial government report that fined 200 students five rupees each for singing 'Vande Mataram' in Rangpur, and noted bans implemented in many schools, illustrating the song's potency as a formidable weapon in the fight for freedom.

Nation Enslaved During 50th Anniversary:

Modi observed that while the 50th anniversary of 'Vande Mataram' unfolded, the nation was shackled by colonial chains. The song continued to offer the people hope and resolve against oppression. During its 100th anniversary, when the nation was battling the dark period of Emergency, the anthem inspired courage and defiance against the constitutional and democratic assault.

Ascending Heights on the 150th Anniversary:

Modi declared that as 'Vande Mataram' marks 150 years, India has emerged as a global power. He emphasized that India is now the fifth-largest economy, advancing rapidly, attributing this success to the blessings of Mother India and the energy of 'Vande Mataram'.

More Than a Freedom Mantra:

Modi asserted that 'Vande Mataram' is not an ordinary song; it is an invocation of liberation and momentum. He stated that the anthem charted the course of the freedom movement and empowered millions with bravery.

Frustrating British Plots:

Highlighting the Bengal partition, Modi mentioned the British strategy "Divide Bengal, Divide India." Yet, 'Vande Mataram' thwarted their attempts, sparking widespread activism and compelling the British to alter their strategies.

Propelled by the Spirit of 'Vande Mataram':

The Prime Minister articulated that modern India's strides in development, technology, global leadership, and self-reliance embrace the same spirit that once secured national independence. He said 'Vande Mataram' resides in the nation's soul, poised to propel India to unprecedented heights in the future.
