Kamla Persad-Bissessar's ancestral village, Bhelupur, is nestled in Itarhi block, Buxar district. This tiny village of 1,127 people now has a place on the international map. Kamla was born in Trinidad, yet her ancestors, notably great-grandfather Pandit Ram Lakhan Mishra, journeyed as indentured laborers aboard the Volga ship from Kolkata port to Trinidad in the late 19th century. Now, her family fondly referred to as Uncles, still resides here.
