Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Trinidad & Tobago on Thursday for the second phase of his five-country tour. At Piarco International Airport, he was warmly greeted by Trinidad and Tobago's PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar, accompanied by 38 ministers and four MPs. Subsequently, PM Modi received a ceremonial guard of honor at the airport.

This represents Modi's first bilateral visit to the Caribbean nation as PM and the first official visit by any Indian Prime Minister since 1999. The visit comes at the invitation of the Trinidadian PM.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

During the visit, scheduled from July 3rd to 4th, PM Modi will meet Trinidad and Tobago's President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar for bilateral talks aimed at strengthening relations.

Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission in Port of Spain shared a post on X, enthusiastically welcoming PM Modi: 'Welcome to Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi!'

Prior to the visit, India's High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago, Pradeep Singh Rajpurohit, noted that both the people and the government of Trinidad & Tobago desire deep cooperation with India.

Excitement Among the People

According to news agencies, there is considerable excitement among the public as everyone anticipates this visit. Trinidad & Tobago already demonstrates a strong desire for deeper engagement and partnership with India, embracing long-term, comprehensive collaboration.

Highlighting the deep cultural and emotional ties between the two countries, Rajpurohit remarked on how nearly half the population of Trinidad & Tobago is of Indian descent, with people living there for over 180 years, many reaching the fifth and sixth generations. He also emphasized the Indian diaspora's enthusiasm, which actively follows India's progress and strives to preserve its heritage across generations.

The High Commissioner stated that PM Modi's visit will build upon foundations laid during last year's second India-CARICOM summit in Guyana, focusing discussions on agriculture, IT, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy, where tangible results are anticipated.

He mentioned that many ministers in Trinidad & Tobago's new government are of Indian descent and look forward to further advancing the benefits of India's growth journey.

In fact, PM Modi's visit is part of a five-country tour from July 2nd to July 9th. This visit to Trinidad & Tobago is expected to reinforce bilateral relations, especially in sectors such as digital finance, healthcare, IT, and innovation energy.
