Amid growing calls for early general elections in Bangladesh, the Chief Advisor of the interim government, Mohammad Yunus, clarified that the elections could take place anytime between December 2025 and June 2026. He shared this insight during an event in Tokyo, Japan, where he is currently on an official visit.

The statement from Yunus aligns with a significant rally organized by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Dhaka, advocating for the restoration of youths' political rights.

During his address, Mohammad Yunus stated, "When elections occur, an elected government takes responsibility, and we dutifully hand over power. People are eager to know when the elections will be held as politicians are anxious to gain power. I've been assuring them that elections could happen as early as this December, or, if procedures are delayed, by June 2026."

He further mentioned that they have a six-month period to accelerate reforms. If reforms proceed slowly, it might take a bit longer, but the process cannot be indefinite. By June 2026, this must be completed without fail.

Yunus's declaration is deemed politically significant, given the political instability and election uncertainty that has clouded Bangladesh since Sheikh Hasina was removed from power. Experts believe this statement showcases the interim government's intention, yet opposition parties and the international community remain focused on whether these elections will be fair and transparent.
