But Volkswagen re-strategized for India, gearing up for a strong comeback, which is visibly taking shape. The company has announced the launch of five cars in India this year, with the unveiling of the first, Tayron R-Line.
Volkswagen has introduced its flagship SUV Tayron R-Line for India. This premium 7-seater SUV will top the current lineup. Positioned above the Tiguan R-Line, the Tayron R-Line marks Volkswagen's return to the three-row SUV segment after the Tiguan AllSpace's exit. Let's delve into what this car offers.

In terms of design, the Tayron R-Line exudes a powerful and aggressive R-line styling. From afar, it instantly creates the quintessential Volkswagen family image in your mind. Up front, the sporty bumper lends it a commanding road presence, while the 19-inch alloy wheels enhance its look. At the rear, connected taillamps and an illuminated Volkswagen emblem adorn it.
To give you an idea, this SUV's dimensions are similar to the Toyota Fortuner, with a length of 4,795 mm, width of 1,855 mm, height of 1,835 mm, and wheelbase of 2,745 mm. Leaving aside the width, the R-Line is slightly more compact overall.

Stepping inside, the Tayron R-Line’s cabin offers a premium feel with a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital driver display. The three-spoke steering wheel, along with silver trim and an illuminated 'R' logo on the dashboard, adds to its elegance. Additionally, customizable ambient lighting in 30 colors provides the cabin a more premium ambiance.
Under the hood, Tayron R-Line is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo petrol engine, used also in the Tiguan R-Line, delivering 204 HP and 320 Nm of torque. For driving dynamics, it features an all-wheel-drive system and a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The SUV can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.3 seconds, with a top speed of 224 km/h.

In terms of features, the Tayron R-Line comes equipped with an 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, 12-way power-adjustable front seats with memory, massage, and ventilation functions. It also includes an augmented reality head-up display, panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, and 3-zone climate control.
Safety is a strong point for the Tayron R-Line, with 9 airbags, electronic stability control, hill start and descent assist, a 360-degree camera, and Level 2 advanced driver assistance system. Notably, this SUV received a 5-star safety rating in the 2025 Euro NCAP crash test.

Volkswagen plans to launch its premium SUV Tayron R-Line in the Indian market by March 2026. This model will be locally assembled and brought as a CKD unit. The company's focus is to position it as a strong contender in the premium segment, with an expected price tag between 45 to 50 lakh rupees (ex-showroom). At this price, it will directly compete with the likes of Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian, and MG Gloster.
