Politics is a realm of endless possibilities, where equations can shift unpredictably. Take Himachal for example, where Vikramaditya Singh, who was seen rebelling against the Congress a few days ago, now stands as their declared candidate from Mandi in the Lok Sabha elections. Although the party is yet to officially announce his nomination.

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu hints at Vikramaditya Singh's candidacy

The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has hinted at this development. In a meeting in Delhi, it’s believed that Vikramaditya Singh's name was discussed. CM Sukhu confirmed that Mandi will surely get a young leader, with Pratibha Singh asserting Vikramaditya Singh as a potent candidate. It’s noteworthy that Pratibha Singh is the current MP from this seat.

A tough fight for the BJP

The day might be near when Vikramaditya Singh's nomination will be officially sealed, but it's clear that Kangana Ranaut, the Bollywood actress and BJP candidate, is set to face a formidable opponent from Congress. Entering the political battleground against a seasoned rival, Ranaut’s journey won't be easy. Here's a glimpse into the challenges that lie ahead for Kangana, and the advantages that can make the path smoother for Vikramaditya.

First, about Kangana

Kangana Ranaut needs no introduction, with a unique standing in Bollywood. She's chosen her own path over aligning with any groups and has ventured successfully into film production. Her portrayal of Rani Laxmibai in 'Manikarnika' was widely praised, earning her the title of 'Queen' of Bollywood. BJP, making a bold move in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, has nominated Ranaut for the Mandi seat.

Kangana hails from Manali in Himachal Pradesh, and her active presence is apparent, be it attending the installation ceremony of the Ram Mandir or supporting Prime Minister Modi's comments. Her recent statements on India's independence and PM Modi have sparked conversations.

Now, about the Mandi seat of Himachal

The Mandi seat is currently held by Congress' state president Pratibha Singh. In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, she secured a win as the Congress candidate. Beating her BJP rival Maheshwar Singh by approximately 65,000 votes, Congress also won central power. Following the death of Veer Bhadra Singh in 2013, the by-election saw Pratibha Singh defeating BJP's Jai Ram Thakur by more than 100,000 votes.

The 2014 'Modi wave' saw BJP's Ram Swaroop Sharma defeating Pratibha Singh by 40,000 votes in Mandi. It’s interesting to note, BJP swept all seats in Himachal that year. The 2019 election set a record in Mandi when BJP's Ram Swaroop Sharma beat Congress' Aashray Sharma by over 400,000 votes.

However, 2021 brought another by-election to Mandi after Ram Swaroop Sharma's demise. Congress nominated Pratibha Singh once again and she defeated BJP's Brigadier Khushal Thakur by about 9,000 votes.

Kangana faces a formidable political family with over three decades of influence in this region, having dominated the seat three times. Vikramaditya Singh has the advantage of a strong political legacy and faces a first-time candidate who, so far, only boasts celebrity fame. The decision of whom the people of Mandi will trust will become clear on June 4.
