After the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in a U.S. military operation, grave concerns have surfaced in neighboring Colombia about the evolving situation. The Colombian government and security analysts have warned that this development could have far-reaching destabilizing effects, particularly concerning border security and a refugee crisis. Adding to the tension, President Trump threatened the Colombian president to "save himself" after Maduro's arrest.

In the early hours of Saturday, the Colombian government strongly denounced the U.S. assaults on Venezuela, which targeted military bases and led to Maduro's detention. Colombia promptly decided to fortify its 2,219-kilometer eastern land border with Venezuela, an area already sensitive due to guerilla activities and cocaine production.

According to Colombian President Gustavo Petro, an emergency national security meeting was convened around 3 AM. President Petro asserted on the social media platform X that the Colombian government denounces this assault on the sovereignty of Venezuela and all of Latin America. He also indicated that state forces have been mobilized to ensure border security.

Security experts suggest that the removal of Maduro could exacerbate Colombia's already fragile security situation. Armed groups active in border regions, smuggling networks, and the illegal drug trade might exploit this instability.

Meanwhile, refugee aid organizations have also issued warnings that if the situation in Venezuela deteriorates following U.S. intervention, Colombia will bear the brunt. With the potential for a large influx of people across the border, challenges on both humanitarian and security levels could escalate significantly.
