On Saturday evening, January 3rd, the air forces of Britain and France embarked on a collaborative air raid targeting an Islamic State (ISIS) underground weapon depot in Syria, reported the British Ministry of Defense.

This strategic target was situated in the hilly terrain north of the ancient city of Palmyra within central Syria. According to intelligence reports, ISIS utilized this location to store armaments and explosives. The absence of civilians in the area promised a minimized risk of civilian casualties.

In a coordinated effort, the Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon FGR4 fighter jets, aided by French combat planes, executed this precise attack. Mid-flight refueling for the British aircraft was facilitated by a Voyager tanker, enabling continuous operations. They aimed their state-of-the-art Paveway IV guided bombs at the depot’s entry tunnels.

A Ministry of Defense-released video showcased the aerial refueling of Typhoon jets. Initial reports indicate a successful operation, with all British planes returning unharmed. Detailed assessments are currently underway.

UK Defense Secretary John Healy emphasized, “This undertaking underscores Britain’s leadership prowess. We stand united with our allies to suppress ISIS and eradicate its perilous, violent ideology from the Middle East.” He further added this mission targeted terrorists endangering our way of life.

From 2014 to 2019, ISIS seized large regions of Syria and Iraq, enforcing a brutal reign. Though militarily defeated in the 2019 Battle of Baghuz, remnants linger. They aspire to surge anew.
