After extending a 30-day reprieve to Mexico, U.S. President Donald Trump has now offered the same to Canada by delaying tariffs for a month.
Following a phone call with President Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the postponement of U.S.-imposed tariffs on Canada. Previously, the U.S. had enforced a hefty 25% tariff on Canada, raising significant concerns of a trade war.
Trudeau mentioned that President Trump agreed to suspend the tariffs for around 30 days, as Ottawa committed to enhancing cooperation on border issues raised by Trump and agreed to bolster border security initiatives.

On Saturday, Donald Trump cited national security concerns related to illegal immigration and drug trafficking as reasons to impose a 25% tariff on most imports from Canada and Mexico, alongside a 10% tariff on China. This decision was supposed to be effective from Tuesday midnight. In retaliation, Canada and Mexico had proposed the idea of counter-tariffs.
Tariffs Delayed for Mexico Too
Prior to this, Mexico's President stated that discussions had taken place with Trump, leading to an immediate one-month suspension of tariffs on Mexico. President Sheinbaum mentioned that Mexico would deploy 10,000 National Guards at the border to curb drug trafficking into the US.
President Sheinbaum further expressed that discussions with Trump will continue, although no meetings are scheduled at present. In the interim, Trump also confirmed this short-term understanding with the Mexican President, emphasizing an immediate one-month halt on tariffs.
