Protesting Accountant Candidates in Lucknow

The path to government employment in UP remains fraught with challenges, showing no signs of easing. Recently, the UP Police Exam was cancelled due to a leaked paper, prompting a re-examination call by the government. Candidates for the Review Officer and Assistant Review Officer (RO/ARO Exam) also alleged paper leaks, leading to persistent protests. Furthermore, in the 69,000 teacher recruitments, 6,800 positions have not been filled yet.

Amid these events, accountant candidates have amassed in thousands at Lucknow's Revenue Department to stage a sit-in for their appointment letters, steadfast in their demands. In conversation with 'Aaj Tak', the applicants revealed that they were promised appointment letters during Prime Minister's employment-focused mega show in Varanasi on February 23rd. Despite the promise, they now find themselves shuttling between government offices without employment.

Forced to Resign from Previous Jobs

Among the candidates are those who resigned from other government positions with hopes of becoming accountants. They claim the government compelled them to quit their previous jobs, and now they are caught in limbo. They assert they won't be swayed by promises any longer and will leave the Revenue headquarters with jobs in hand after their protest.

The candidates state they were asked for NOCs, resignations from other jobs, and some were even employed for a month without the issuance of appointment letters. They are now sitting in protest due to these delays.

What's the Controversy?

In fact, for the 8,085 accountant positions recruited in 2023, the Revenue Council has halted appointment letters following objections. Although Prime Minister Modi was set to distribute appointment letters in Varanasi on February 23rd, a directive from the Revenue Council's Commissioner and Secretary, based on the UP Subordinate Services Selection Commission's recommendation, paused the process. The UP Subordinate Services Selection Commission's potentially final decision for 7,987 selected accountants will be reviewed by the Supreme Court on March 22nd. Thus, appointment letters can only be distributed after the court's verdict.

The protesters argue that had the Revenue Council issued the appointment letters promptly, this complication wouldn't have arisen. If the list had been released and appointment letters distributed back in January following the final results, the current issue could have been avoided.

Why the Halt?

An applicant's petition regarding the accountant recruitment led to the Supreme Court's order, causing the department to suspend appointment letters issuance. Some candidates believe this could have been resolved if the Revenue Council had promptly processed the list of selected accountants provided on January 6th. Several candidates turned to the courts after the final selection, prompting the halt of appointment letter distribution until the court issues its final ruling.
