At just 26, breaking away from familial expectations, he founded Kotak Mahindra Bank. Starting with 'Kotak Capital Management Finance Limited' in 1985 offering bill discounting, his firm steadily grew from humble beginnings.

RBI issues first banking license

A Milestone Banking License from RBI

The initial firm, focused on bill discounting, expanded into loans, stock brokering, investment banking, insurance, and mutual funds, ultimately transforming into Kotak Mahindra Bank in 2003 with just 3 million rupees. It became the first non-banking finance company to be granted a banking license by the Reserve Bank of India on March 22, 2003—setting a benchmark in India's corporate landscape. On September 1, 2023, Uday Kotak transitioned from CEO and Managing Director to a non-executive director role at the bank.
