Amid growing trade tension between India and the United States, a new statement from Donald Trump is sparking widespread discussion. The issue revolves around Russian oil. Donald Trump has asserted that India is reducing its oil purchases from Russia, emphasizing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a great leader and a dear friend. According to Trump, India was aware that continuing to import oil from Russia could lead to strict measures like tariffs from the US.

On the other hand, US Senator Lindsey Graham has made a bold claim. He stated that the Indian ambassador approached him last month, discussing a reduction in Russian oil purchases and requesting a tariff cut for India.

Lindsey Graham's Significant Claim

According to an ANI report, US Senator Lindsey Graham claims that the Indian ambassador sought relief on tariffs by pledging a drop in Russian oil purchases. On Sunday, aboard Air Force One, he shared with reporters that India’s ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, discussed last month’s purchases of reduced Russian oil and requested a 25% reduction on the 50% tariff imposed on India.

Graham stated, "I was at the Indian ambassador’s residence a month ago, and his primary agenda was to show how India is buying less Russian oil, asking me to request the President to provide a 25% tariff concession."

President Trump's Statement Grabs Headlines

The Senator's claim comes as Donald Trump publicly voiced intentions to increase tariffs on India's continued import of Russian oil. Trump, in his statement, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi by saying, "PM Narendra Modi is an excellent person. He knew my displeasure and it was crucial to keep me pleased. Should trade continue, we would swiftly enhance tariffs." Trump has maintained a stringent stance on Russian oil, yet New Delhi has justified its purchases, citing domestic energy security needs.

Interestingly, Graham’s comments follow a phone dialogue between Trump and PM Modi just weeks prior, where both leaders reaffirmed the need to accelerate bilateral trade relations despite ongoing tariff tensions. However, this issue is evolving into a political spectacle.

Meanwhile, negotiations over tariffs between India and the US are ongoing. Last year saw nearly six rounds of discussions between the two countries on a potential trade agreement. There is hope that this year might witness an ultimate resolution on the matter.
