In the village of Sarai Jagna in Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh, 23 families' homes were demolished in a bulldozer action to clear encroachment from government land. These homes were built 40 years ago. Moreover, more than 100 homes and shops have been served notices, causing the entire village to fear for the future of their dwellings. But whose complaint led to this bulldozer action?
According to media reports, a dispute over a path's land occurred between two locals in this village. Gudiya, also known as Hadisun, needed a larger path, while her neighbor Javed allowed only a 3 feet path. This discrepancy set the stage for the bulldozer action. The dispute escalated to the High Court, and after a year and a half of legal battles, Gudiya received justice. However, nobody could foresee that this court ruling would eventually lead to widespread demolition in the village.
Land secured for the path, but at what cost?
Following the court order, the measurement for Gudiya's path began. During this process, the district administration learned that the land in question belonged to the gram panchayat (village community) and that the path was on government land. Consequently, notices were sent to all 129 families in the area, asking them to remove their encroachments or face bulldozer action. This led to the first phase of demolitions, where 23 houses were razed on Wednesday.
Regret over mere 3 feet of land!
Residents of this village now live in fear. The terror of another bulldozer action has led many to demolish their homes and shops voluntarily. People are seen removing their belongings from their houses. The entire village is in chaos. The regret over fighting a prolonged battle for just 3 feet of land has set in. The land and homes they lived on peacefully for years are now being taken away.
