The controversy between TMC MPs Mahua Moitra and Kalyan Banerjee shows no signs of abating. Banerjee is incensed by Moitra's comment made during an India Today podcast referring to him as a pig. He criticized his colleague, labeling her words as inhumane.
In retaliation, Kalyan Banerjee took to Twitter with an extensive post. He remarked, 'I have noted the personal remarks made by Mahua Moitra in a public podcast. Her choice of words, comparing a fellow MP to a 'pig', not only reflects poor taste but shows a blatant disregard for the norms of civil discourse.'
Reacting to Banerjee's remarks about her marriage to Pinaki Mishra, Krishna Nagar MP Mahua Moitra stated, 'You don't wrestle with pigs, as they enjoy it, and you end up dirty. India harbors deeply misogynistic, sexually frustrated, corrupt men found across all political parties in Parliament.'
Responding to this, Kalyan Banerjee stated, 'Those who believe insults can replace debate should reflect on the kind of politics they are engaged in. Resorting to vulgar attacks by a people’s representative doesn’t show strength; it exposes insecurity.'
He clarified, 'I openly state, what I have expressed are issues of public accountability and personal conduct that every public figure must address, whether male or female. If these truths are inconvenient, they do not warrant branding legitimate criticism as 'misogyny.'
Banerjee further declared that calling a male colleague 'sexually frustrated' is improper and an insult. If mirrored language was directed toward a woman, it would rightly provoke nationwide outrage. Yet when a man is targeted, it's either overlooked or even lauded.
He stressed, 'Let me clarify, an insult is an insult. Such remarks are not only vulgar but also perpetuate a poisonous double standard where men are expected to silently endure; if directed at a woman, it would be unacceptable and never tolerated.'
Resignation from TMC Whip Chief
Following a lengthy social media post, Kalyan Banerjee announced his resignation from the position of TMC's Chief Whip in Lok Sabha.
According to news agency PTI, he stated, "I have stepped down from the Chief Whip position in Lok Sabha because 'Didi' (West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee) mentioned a lack of coordination among party MPs during a virtual meeting. Hence, the blame falls on me, prompting my decision to resign."
Intriguingly, sources suggest he might reconsider his resignation and has reached out to top Trinamool leaders.
