India has commenced its most extensive military deployment to date along its eastern border. Siliguri Corridor, the 22-kilometer wide swath known as the Chicken's Neck, connecting the seven northeastern states to the Indian mainland, is set to become an impregnable fortress. This vital region will soon host three new military stations, reflecting a fundamental shift in New Delhi's military strategy.
Near Dhubri in Assam, the Lachit Borphukan Military Station is being set up. Forward bases are also being constructed in Kishanganj, Bihar, and Chopra, West Bengal. Chopra's base is a mere kilometer from the Bangladesh border. More than just military outposts, these are strategic nodes equipped with rapid deployment forces, para-special forces, intelligence units, and high-tech surveillance devices, ensuring the 'Siliguri Corridor's security under any adverse conditions.

The primary reason for India's strategic maneuver is the political shift in Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina's India-friendly government has been succeeded by an interim administration under Muhammad Yunus, whose foreign policy favors China and Pakistan over India. Reports suggest Bangladesh is set to purchase J-10C fighter jets worth $2.2 billion from China and is also collaborating with China in drone manufacturing. Meanwhile, Pakistan has offered it JF-17 Block-C Thunder jets.
India Adopts a Proactive, Not Reactive Stance
The border shared with Bangladesh is strategically significant for India. Bangladesh's tilt towards China and Pakistan poses strategic concerns for India. The Siliguri Corridor, merely 22 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, connects over 45 million people of the northeast with the rest of India. Enemy nations could target this critical link to isolate northeastern states during adversities, prompting India to adopt a proactive approach.

These three new military bases offer security coverage for the entire Siliguri Corridor. The Chopra Military Station in West Bengal is situated less than a kilometer from the Bangladesh border. These military installations enable vigilance deep into Bangladesh, with Indian forces ready to react swiftly to any threat. India's deployment of advanced air defense systems like Rafale fighter jets, BrahMos missiles, and S-400 on the eastern border sends a clear message.
For Bangladesh, the message is unmistakable. The military power gap between India and Bangladesh is vast. Any misstep on their part will be met with a formidable Indian response. The Siliguri Corridor is no longer a vulnerability for India but a fortified strategic asset. The nation stands fully prepared to safeguard its territorial integrity.
