Security agencies in Assam and Tripura have achieved a significant breakthrough. In a decisive move against a major network linked to radical groups in Bangladesh, the police have detained a total of 11 individuals. Guwahati's Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahant disclosed on Tuesday that these arrests were made based on intelligence inputs received from central agencies and executed by the Special Task Force.

According to the Police Commissioner, a large-scale search operation was carried out on Monday night across Assam's Barpeta, Chirang, Baksa, Darrang districts, and neighboring state Tripura. During these operations, a total of 11 jihadists were apprehended. They were reportedly operating under direct orders from active radical groups in Bangladesh. Among those arrested, 10 are residents of Assam.

One accused, Jagir Mia, was captured from Tripura. Police assert that the detainees are members of the 'Imam Mahmood Kafila' (IMK) module. Investigations have revealed that their primary aim was to destabilize Assam and the broader northeast region. Their agenda included spreading the ideology of 'Ghazwatul Hind'.

Active Terrorists Post Bangladesh Government Change

During the raids, police seized several suspicious items, though no weapons or ammunition were recovered. The Police Commissioner revealed a startling connection, indicating that terrorist activities have surged following the government change in Bangladesh in August 2024. Both established and emerging terror groups have become increasingly active.

'Purva Akash' Group Conducted Recruitment Operations

Senior leaders from Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), and Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) had directed the activation of an Indian module. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government, IMK's Amir was released from prison, subsequently accelerating anti-India plots. This syndicate operated predominantly through a social media platform.

Targeting Youth in Assam, West Bengal, and Tripura

The 'Purva Akash' group was employed for recruiting new members, spreading radicalism, and gathering funds. Youths from Assam, West Bengal, and Tripura were particularly targeted. Bangladeshi nationals Omar and Khalid were tasked with coordinating with the Assam cell, led by Tamim from Barpeta, with several others actively involved.
